Getting your dog's collar size right is one of the most important things you can do for their comfort and safety. A collar that's too tight can restrict breathing and cause skin irritation, while one that's too loose can slip off — leaving your dog without ID or putting them at risk of getting loose.
In this guide, we'll walk you through exactly how to measure your dog for a collar, what to look for in different collar styles, and how to check the fit once it arrives.
What You'll Need
- A soft fabric or flexible tape measure (the kind used for sewing)
- A pen and paper to note down measurements
- Your dog's cooperation — treats help!
Step 1: Measure Your Dog's Neck
Wrap the tape measure around the base of your dog's neck, where the collar would naturally sit. This is typically just above the shoulders. Keep the tape snug but not tight — you should be able to slip two fingers underneath comfortably.
Note that measurement in centimetres. That's your dog's neck circumference.
Step 2: Add the "Two Finger" Rule
Always add approximately 2–3 cm to your dog's neck measurement to find the right collar size. This gives enough room for comfort without being so loose that it can slip over the head.
For example, if your dog's neck measures 38 cm, look for a collar that fits 38–42 cm.
Step 3: Check the Collar's Adjustable Range
Most quality dog collars are adjustable within a size range. When browsing our Dog Collars collection, you'll notice each collar lists its minimum and maximum adjustment range — make sure your dog's measurement falls comfortably in the middle of that range, not at the extremes.
Which Collar Style Is Right for Your Dog?
Leather Collars
Leather collars are durable, stylish, and soften over time to conform to your dog's neck. They're ideal for everyday wear. Our Aalborg Leather Dog Collar and Cody Leather Dog Collar are popular choices for dogs of all sizes.
Nylon Collars
Lightweight and easy to clean, nylon collars are great for active dogs or those who love water. The Nylon Vario Dog Collar offers a secure, adjustable fit ideal for everyday adventures.
Puppy Collars
Puppies grow fast — so it's worth choosing a collar with a generous adjustable range. Browse our Puppy Collars range, designed to be lightweight and gentle on young necks.
How to Check the Fit Once It Arrives
- The two-finger test: Slide two fingers under the collar. You should be able to do this with a little resistance — not easily, and not uncomfortably tight.
- The slip test: Try to gently slip the collar over your dog's ears. It should not come off easily. If it does, tighten it one notch.
- Check for rubbing: After the first few wears, inspect your dog's neck for any signs of irritation, hair loss, or chafing.
Measuring Tips by Breed Type
- Whippets and Lurchers: These slim-necked sighthounds often have necks narrower than their heads, meaning standard collars can slip off. Browse our dedicated Whippet Collars and Lurcher Collars collections for properly proportioned options.
- Staffies and stocky breeds: Powerful necks need sturdy hardware. Our Staffy Collars are built to handle the strength of muscular breeds.
- Puppies: Measure frequently as they grow — a puppy can outgrow a collar in just a few weeks during their first months.
